C'River NEWMAP Moves To Tackle Erosion In Calabar

By Ebi COLLINS

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has conducted a comprehensive assessment of erosion sites in Calabar, Cross River State, in an effort to address perennial erosion issues with these sites. A tripartite assessment involving the contractors, consultants, and NEWMAP's technical staff aimed to determine the necessary steps to close these sites before embarking on new projects.

Mr. Emmanuel Eyo, the Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, emphasized the urgency of completing these sites, as over 70 percent of the project's funds have already been disbursed to the contractors. He highlighted the challenges at Edim Otop and Ikot Uduak, primarily stemming from illegal sand mining activities, which must be halted to prevent further damage to the projects.

Community involvement, Eyo believes, is vital to address these issues. NEWMAP plans to engage with the community, sensitize them about the importance of preserving the projects, and provide alternative livelihoods to individuals involved in destructive activities like sand mining.

One particular dispute with an individual named Endurance, working with Aqua Prime Water, over a tricycle provided by NEWMAP for community waste management has been reported to the police. NEWMAP is determined to ensure the return of the tricycle, emphasizing that it's a project property, not a personal one.

NEWMAP also identified artificial erosion caused by poor drainage and blockages. The improper management of refuse in the area exacerbates these issues. Proper termination of drains and community sensitization are part of the strategies to mitigate these problems.

NEWMAP's Project Engineer, Obeten Otu, expressed confidence in their ability to address these challenges. He explained that while they have encountered some technical complaints, these are being addressed with the help of the consultant. Furthermore, NEWMAP plans to conduct routine sensitization and awareness campaigns, involving relevant stakeholders, to ensure the long-term sustainability of these projects.
