Commissioners Demand Decentralized Power Generation to End National Grid Collapse

By Missang AKPET

The forum of commissioners for power and energy in Nigeria have raised concerns over the country’s frequent collapse of the national grid.

The chairman of the Chairmens forum and Cross River state commissioner for power and renewable energy, Prince Eka Williams says there is an urgent need for the federal government to transform the electricity landscape in the country which has a lot of impact on individuals and the economy.

Describing the frequent collapse as a National crisis disrupting lives and businesses, the forum is suggesting state based solutions to the crisis.

The commissioners  callled on the federal government to consider the establishment of state electricity markets in a bid to decentralize power generation, transmission and distribution; an approach which they believe will cater for electricity needs of individual states.

The forum also advocated for stronger localized grid systems to reduce dependence on the national grid alongside federal investments on more web grid technologies to stabilize operations.

The commissioners, however, called on the federal government, private investors and international partners to join forces in delivering a sustainable and resilient power sector in the country which they believe will boost productivity and economic activities.
