Commissioner Ayuk's Grassroots Presence: Bridging the Gap Between Government and the People of Etung

By Kingsley Agim

Political leadership, at its core, entails representing the people’s aspirations and ensuring their needs are met. Staying connected to the grassroots, understanding their concerns, and addressing their challenges provide the populace with a sense of belonging and make governance more accessible.

In Etung Local Government Area, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, Cross River State's Commissioner for Health, has exemplified this ideal since his appointment over a year ago. The Bendeghe-Ekiem-born politician has maintained an unwavering presence at sociocultural events, town hall meetings, local sports tournaments, and other community/local activities. His dedication has not only endeared him to the people of Etung but has also positioned him as a symbol of effective leadership in the state.

Described as "a round peg in a round hole," Dr. Ayuk's impressive performance in the health sector has earned Governor Bassey Otu widespread praise for appointing such a capable leader. Under Dr. Ayuk’s stewardship, the health sector has become a cornerstone of the administration’s success, drawing commendations from the public, media, and international partners.

One of Dr. Ayuk’s defining traits is his commitment to the Governor's 'People First' agenda and his drive to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among Cross Riverians and residents.

Yuletide Outreach: A Testament to Grassroots Engagement

During the recent festive season, Dr. Ayuk extended goodwill to various segments of society, including political leaders, traditional institutions, social groups, and ordinary citizens. True to his nature, he donated cash and food items to communities, evoking heartfelt appreciation from recipients. While the donations might appear modest, the joy on the faces of the beneficiaries spoke volumes about their significance.

In his visit to the Etung traditional rulers at Effraya, the Acting Paramount Ruler, Ntue-Atue Ntufam Anthony Etta, expressed his gratitude, stating: "Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk is the only politician who consistently remembers us. He keeps in touch and supports us in meaningful ways. We are proud of his contributions to the health sector and grateful for his presence."

The visit, which brought together the Etung Traditional Institution, culminated in prayers from the monarchs for Dr. Ayuk's continued success.

Dr. Ayuk’s goodwill extended to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Etung, ward chairmen, women leaders, and councillors across the local government area.

 Recognition from Stakeholders

At the residence of Prince Ebuta Ojong Ayuk, a prominent political figure and former presidential aide, the Commissioner received high praise. Prince Ayuk described Dr. Ayuk as one of the most effective members of the Governor’s cabinet, commending his leadership and dedication to the health sector. He also urged young leaders to emulate Dr. Ayuk’s qualities of humility, purpose, and service.

 Community Engagement at Bendeghe-Ekiem

In his hometown of Bendeghe-Ekiem, Dr. Ayuk spent a day, after several other visits, connecting with chiefs, women, and youth leaders, culminating in a communal feast at his residence. Notable activities included commissioning the remodeled Cocoa Roundabout, a project led by the Bendeghe-Ekiem Youth Leadership under Kingsley Ntue Tandu, and chairing the grand finale of the Bendeghe-Ekiem Unity Tournament, hosted by Hon. Bitty Tangban, Councillor representing Bendeghe-Ekiem Ward.

Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk’s steadfast commitment to grassroots engagement has effectively bridged the gap between the government and the people of Etung. His efforts have fostered a sense of inclusion and brought governance closer to the community. Through his actions, Ayuk continues to exemplify what it means to lead with purpose, empathy, and dedication.
