By Our Reporter
The Cross River Internal Revenue Service has urged members of the newly set up Scrap Metal Regulatory Agency to work out strategies that will enhance accelerated economic growth of the State.
The Service's Acting Executive Chairman, Prince Edwin Okon, gave the charge during a meeting with the Agency, recently, at his office in Calabar.
According to him: "In line with Governor Bassey Otu administration's 'People First' aspirations, the Scrap Metal Regulatory Agency should leverage on the profitability of scrap metal business and come up with possible business outlines on how the State Government can even build a scrap metal recycling aluminum factory, which will facilitate job opportunities and wealth creation for the teeming masses and the State, respectively."
He noted that as its name implies, the Agency should regulate the activities of the scrap operators in the State to ensure that their activities are in line with best practices and the Cross River State Regulatory Agency Law, that set them up.
The IRS boss further advised the Agency that for them to succeed, they need to come up with an action plan and avail themselves with the Cross River State Regulatory Agency Law as well as the Cross River State House of Assembly Resolution No. 70 of revised consolidated State fees and charges regulations - 2020, to guide their operations.
Prince Okon prompted the Agency to reach out to the Service for whatever synergies necessary as both Institutions have a similar goal, which is to ensure that the current administration succeeds.
The Director General of the Scrap Metal Regulatory Agency, Capt. Joseph Offiong (Rtd), while agreeing to work with the IRS to boost the State's economy, thanked the acting Executive Chairman for the detailed insights on how to conduct their official duties with the backing of the law to harmonize taxes and mitigate multiple taxation.
Also speaking the Secretary of the Agency, Pastor Donald Effiom, said members of the Agency will go back to the drawing board with the information gathered and come up with results.
