From Omaka OKOH (Abakaliki)
About 322 students of the Faculty of Education, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, are among those selected to benefit  from the Federal Government’s Education Scholarship Award for final year students of education programmes in the Nigeria tertiary education system.
The good news was made known recently by the Director, Federal Scholarship Board, Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, Mrs. A. Ndajiwo during a verification exercise at the university’s senate chamber,
The Director who was represented by the Southeast Zonal coordinator, Federal Scholarship Board, Mrs. Uzoani Omeje, noted that the Education Scholarship Award was meant to support students of education, most especially those in final year to encourage and support them, adding that Three Hundred and           Twenty-Two (322) students of AE-FUNAI were privileged to be among those selected for the Federal Government largesse.
She explained that the purpose of the verification exercise was to ensure that the right students with the appropriate CPGA were selected, stressing that at the end of the exercise, the award which is worth Two Hundred Thousand naira (N200, 000) would be sent to the bank accounts of each of the students to cover their charges for the academic session.
Earlier while welcoming the team to the University, the Vice-Chancellor,            Prof. Sunday Elom who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Prof. Romanus Ejaga, commended the Federal Government for their efforts geared towards repositioning university education, especially in giving scholarship award to students of faculties of education in Nigeria.
He stressed that the scholarship award was a big encouragement to students of education in Nigeria and also an impetus for candidates to enroll into the education programmes in order to become professional and certified teachers in the nearest future.
Hills Alex Oluchi, a 400 level student of the Department of English and Linguistics Studies, said they doubted the veracity of the programme and the sincerity of Federal Government on the scholarship award, which made many of his class mates not to apply for the programme.
He therefore commended the government for initiating and following through with the programme, noting that the money would go a long way in ameliorating the financial challenges facing students.
He further advised other students to eschew cynicism but to trust the policies, programmes and projects of government especially in matters that concern them like the scholarship award, noting that in spite of the present economic crunch pervading the country,  better days still lie ahead.
Miss. Chimezie Amanda Chinenye, also a 400 level student of the Department of English and Linguistics studies, appreciated the effort of the Vice-Chancellor and his Management team for providing the enabling environment which made students to be part of the prograame.
She also thanked the Federal Government for supporting students financially in this challenging time, adding that the fund would help in solving some of their problems.
