Community News: Ekoi Indigenes In North America Donate Food, Medicals, Household items Orphanage Homes, Women, Vulnerable

By Agba AGBA

The Ekoi Association North America (EANA) has donated essential items worth millions of naira to four less-privileged homes, women and vulnerable persons within the Cross River communities in Northern senatorial district.

This is part of its annual humanitarian outreach and commitment to giving back to its homeland.

The beneficiaries include Virtuous Women Orphanage, Ugep; Abundant Love Orphanage, Ikom; Divine Providence Orphanage, Ogoja; and St. Joseph Centre for the Visually Impaired, Obudu.

The gesture underscores the Association’s compassion for vulnerable persons and its determination to ease their challenges, improve their living conditions and restore hope to those in need.

Presenting the items on behalf of the Association’s President, Prof. Anthony Agbeh, and the Chairman of the Outreach Committee, Mrs. Helen Ekpo, the Association’s contact person, Sonnie Clemens, explained that the outreach is an annual initiative through which EANA identifies and addresses the needs of vulnerable communities across the Ekoi-speaking areas, from Akamkpa to Obanliku. He emphasized that distance and residence in the Diaspora would never diminish the Association’s commitment to its homeland, noting that the items were carefully procured following a thorough assessment of each beneficiary institution’s needs.

Receiving the donations, Mrs. Grace Otu Effiong of Virtuous Women Orphanage, Ugep; Deaconess Gertrude Sama Bassey of Abundant Love Orphanage, Ikom; Rev. Sr. Rita Abang of Divine Providence Orphanage, Ogoja; and Rev. Sr. Dorathy Atsu of St. Joseph Centre for the Visually Impaired, Obudu, expressed profound appreciation to EANA for its thoughtfulness, generosity and life-changing intervention. They prayed that God would richly bless the Association’s leadership and members, replenish their resources and reward their sacrifices with greater accomplishments, good health and enduring prosperity. They also expressed optimism that the gesture would inspire other individuals and organizations to extend similar support to vulnerable members of society.

Items donated to the orphanages included beds, mattresses, pillows, bedspreads, chairs, tables, books, first-aid boxes, foodstuffs and fire extinguishers. In addition to these essential supplies, St. Joseph Centre for the Visually Impaired, Obudu, received specialized educational and mobility aids, including Braille boards, Braille papers, stylus pens, sensitive mobility canes, typewriters, marker board, typing papers and other essential materials to support learning, mobility and independent living.

The outreach reflects EANA’s enduring spirit of solidarity and community development.

The Association’s exemplary intervention is a worthy reminder that collective responsibility and humanitarian service remain vital to building a more inclusive and caring society.
