Danare Incursion: Abang Calls for Urgent Federal Action
By Ekanem Asuquo
The Member representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Victor Abang, has strongly condemned the invasion of Danare Community in Cross River State by armed Cameroonian soldiers, describing it as a breach of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday in the border community within Boki Local Government Area, reportedly sparked tension and concern among residents.
Abang expressed worry over the recurring nature of such cross border incursions, warning that they pose significant security risks to border communities and threaten national stability.
He stressed that the unauthorized entry of foreign military personnel into Nigerian territory is unacceptable and should not be condoned under any circumstance.
The lawmaker noted that beyond its security implications, the incident also endangers the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as the economic activities of residents who depend on peaceful cross border interactions for their livelihood.
He commended residents of Danare for their calm disposition during the incident, saying their restraint helped prevent a possible escalation of tension.
Abang called on the Federal Government to urgently engage Cameroonian authorities through diplomatic channels in order to address the persistent boundary challenges affecting communities along the Nigeria Cameroon border.
He emphasized that a lasting solution to the recurring disputes requires a comprehensive and sustained diplomatic effort, warning that failure to act decisively could worsen the situation in the future.
The lawmaker also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Boundary Commission, and relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the latest incursion and strengthen security measures along vulnerable border communities.
Abang reaffirmed his commitment to the safety and welfare of his constituents in Boki and the wider Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency, assuring them that he would continue to engage relevant authorities to ensure appropriate action is taken.
He maintained that Nigeria’s territorial integrity remains sacrosanct and called for swift government intervention to safeguard citizens living in border areas.
