COMMENTARY: Otu @67: Celebrating Service, Assessing Impact

 By Isaac Aqua

Birthdays offer more than an opportunity to celebrate longevity. For leaders entrusted with the destinies of others, they provide moments for reflection, assessment and renewed commitment. As Prince Bassey Otu, governor of Cross River , marks his 67th birthday on Saturday ,the occasion offers an opportunity to celebrate his contributions to public service, acknowledge his administration's achievements and assess its impact on the people.

Fondly known as the Sweet Prince, Otu has built his public profile around compassion, accessibility and people centred governance. Born on October 18, 1959, in Adiabo, Odukpani local government , his journey through the banking and petroleum sectors, the National Assembly and the governorship reflects a sustained commitment to public affairs.

His years in the House of Representatives between 2003 and 2011 and the Senate between 2011 and 2015 demonstrated his people oriented philosophy. Beyond legislative responsibilities, he facilitated federal appointments for Cross River youths, supported vocational training and empowerment schemes, and helped beneficiaries move from tenancy to homeownership. These interventions underscored his belief that representation must translate beyond legislation and project execution into tangible improvements in people's lives.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Otu has sought to advance this philosophy through the People First Agenda, prioritising human welfare, economic recovery, institutional renewal and the restoration of public confidence in governance.

The recovery of Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort stands out among his administration's achievements. Once a symbol of Cross River's economic ambition, the facility languished under financial difficulties and the control of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria. Its return to state control has reopened opportunities to reclaim the state's position in Nigeria's tourism and investment landscape.

Equally significant is the revival of the Cross River State Newspaper Corporation and its flagship publication, the Nigerian Chronicle. After years of neglect and the destruction that followed the October 2020 #EndSARS violence, the government's remodelling and re-equipment of the institution, alongside the restoration of the Government Printing Press, represent a welcome investment in public information infrastructure.

Otu's attention to civil servants and retirees also deserves commendation. Efforts to address outstanding gratuities, housing interventions through CROSPIL and the proposed 1,000 unit People First Housing Scheme demonstrate an appreciation of workers' welfare.

Particularly noteworthy are vocational training and empowerment initiatives for retiring civil servants. By exploring opportunities for beneficiaries to acquire practical skills and pursue alternative livelihoods, the administration offers a humane approach to retirement planning.

Across the three senatorial districts, road construction and rehabilitation have improved connectivity in several communities. Interventions in primary healthcare, recruitment of health workers and efforts to improve nutrition indicators, including reductions in severe acute malnutrition, also reflect a commitment to essential services.

Education remains another important priority. Payment of West African Examinations Council registration fees for thousands of indigenous students has eased financial pressure on families and protected educational opportunities. At a time when school expenses increasingly strain household incomes, such assistance reinforces the principle that poverty should not deny children access to education. The transformation of College of Education Akamkpa to University of Education and Entrepreneurship constitute a bold step to address prevailing manpower gaps in the state.

Agriculture and enterprise development offer further prospects for economic growth. Project GROW, the distribution of improved oil palm seedlings and mini tractors, initiatives in cocoa and coffee production, and efforts to connect farmers with markets represent attempts to move agricultural policy beyond rhetoric.

Vocational training, support for micro, small and medium enterprises, and grants to youths and former agitators further extend Otu's empowerment tradition.

Fiscal management provides another basis for assessing the People First administration. Efforts to reduce domestic debt and strengthen internally generated revenue through automation and improved accountability are encouraging.

At 67, Otu deserves neither uncritical adulation nor reflexive condemnation. His handling of the local government employment saga demonstrates a humane disposition and commitment to addressing the frustrations confronting his people.

As the Sweet Prince celebrates another milestone, Cross River has reason to acknowledge the progress recorded under his leadership while praying for God's grace, strength and wisdom to consolidate the recovery of a state he inherited on the brink of collapse, following years of institutional decay across critical sectors, from security to education and beyond.

At 67, Bassey Otu celebrates a journey of service, compassion and restoration. His enduring legacy, however, will be defined by the prosperity he creates, the institutions he strengthens and the opportunities he secures for generations of Cross River people. And, unquestionably, he is on course.

As Prince Otu celebrates his 67th birthday, the occasion transcends the marking of another year. It celebrates a life shaped by public service, a leadership journey anchored in compassion and a vision of restoration that continues to inspire hope across Cross River . From the corridors of the National Assembly to the Government House in Calabar, the Sweet Prince has remained committed to the conviction that governance must ultimately serve the people and improve their living conditions.

At this defining milestone, we celebrate not merely the man, but the possibilities his leadership represents for a state determined to reclaim its pride of place.

As he turns 67 on Sunday October 18,, let's solicit renewed strength, sound health, divine wisdom and the courage for Otu to confront the challenges that remain. May his years ahead yield greater prosperity, enduring peace and remarkable progress for Cross River.

Happy 67th birthday to the Sweet Prince
