Allegations Rock Umahi Health Sciences University
The David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences in Uburu, Ebonyi State, has come under scrutiny over allegations that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, exerts significant influence on its operations despite its federal status.
The institution, originally established by the Ebonyi State Government under Umahi’s administration, was taken over by the Federal Government in 2022 during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sources alleged that the minister still plays a dominant role in key decisions within the university, creating concerns about governance and institutional independence. Some described the working environment as tense, with fears of victimisation discouraging dissent.
Insiders linked the situation to earlier disputes between Umahi’s administration and the Academic Staff Union of Universities during his time as governor, particularly over funding priorities at Ebonyi State University.
Concerns were also raised about the leadership structure, with claims that the Vice Chancellor, Professor Jesse Uneke, lacks full autonomy in decision making, which has reportedly affected the administration of both the university and its teaching hospital.
Some sources further alleged that key medical facilities are being managed directly by the university rather than the teaching hospital, raising questions about accountability and efficiency.
The governing council, chaired by Adebayo Shittu, was also said to have limited influence. However, Shittu dismissed the claims, stating he has no complaints about the institution’s management.
Reports also indicate that some staff members have resigned over the working conditions, while others described the environment as challenging.
Responding to the allegations, Umahi’s media aide, Francis Nweze, described them as false and misleading. He maintained that the university operates within established legal frameworks and is governed by its council and relevant federal authorities.
He added that while Umahi contributed to the establishment of the institution, he does not interfere in its day to day operations, noting that the minister remains focused on his national duties.
The situation has prompted calls for greater transparency and strict adherence to governance structures to ensure effective management of the institution.
