Women Protest Over Quality of Road Being Constructed in Ikom

Women in Ikom 4/Corners under the ages of Ekpache Nkome Women on Monday staged a protest over what they described as substandard road work on Sweet Mother Street, Ikom 4/Corners.

The mothers, who gathered in large numbers, lamented the poor state of the road despite claims that it had been completed.

They accused contractors of doing a shoddy job while calling on relevant authorities to intervene.

The protesters said pouring asphalt and taking pictures for online publicity was not enough if the road could not serve the people.

Speaking on the issue, a spoke person for the group Mrs. James Williams appealed to the administration of Governor Prince Bassey Otu to listen to their cry and and change the contractors handling the construction.

“It doesn’t end at pouring asphalt, using quality camera to snap the road and post online. The right thing should be done once and for all,” she said.

She noted that Sweet Mother Street is a busy area and the poor condition of the road is already affecting movement, businesses, and daily life in the community.

She urged the Cross River State Government to ensure quality and durability in road projects across Ikom, stressing that taxpayers deserve infrastructure that lasts.

Also speaking, the president General of Ekpache Nkome Comrade Bojor Okune lauded the governor road repairs around Ikom Metropolis but however raised concerns about the poor level of work being carried out.

"The contractors handling the job are the worst we have ever seen, how can you construct a road no drainage, no stone base? We the Ikom people say no to this kind of roads, may the good intentions of the governor not become a disaster for us" he said.
