UNICAL Nursing Students Face Portal Restriction Over Indemnity Form Irregularity

Students in the Nursing programme at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) are currently facing uncertainty following the restriction of access to their student portal over issues related to
unsigned indemnity forms.
Findings indicate that the affected students have been advised to re-register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as part of efforts to resolve discrepancies surrounding their admission records.
Sources within the institution revealed that the matter is connected to indemnity documents reportedly left unsigned during the administration of former Vice-Chancellor, Florence Obi, under whose tenure the admissions in question were processed.
An indemnity form serves as an official confirmation by a university that admissions were conducted in compliance with JAMB regulations and established procedures. The document requires the endorsement of the Vice-Chancellor to validate that due process was followed. Without this authorization, affected admissions may not be fully regularised within JAMB’s central admissions system.
As a result of the missing endorsement, some students’ admission statues were reportedly not properly captured or validated, prompting the directive for them to either re-sit the UTME or undertake a fresh regularisation process to legitimise their records.
Several affected students have expressed concern over the development, noting that they had already resumed academic activities and fulfilled required financial obligations prior to the discovery of the irregularity.
Currently, they are unable to access their student portal and risk losing their admission status if the matter remains unresolved.
As of the time of filing this report, the university management has yet to issue an official statement detailing the scope of the issue or the precise administrative measures being implemented to address it.
