The South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has struck a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to strengthen security and accelerate economic development in the region.

The collaboration was sealed in Abuja during a courtesy visit by SSDC Managing Director, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters.

Akpabio described the South-South as Nigeria’s oil and gas hub and a vital trade gateway, but noted that insecurity, ranging from militancy and piracy to pipeline vandalism, cultism and communal conflicts, continues to undermine stability.

She stressed that robust policing is essential for the Commission to fulfill its mandate.

“Security is the foundation upon which economic growth and social progress are built. We need strong policing support to ensure the smooth execution of our programmes,” she said.

The SSDC boss outlined plans to curb insecurity through youth engagement, economic empowerment and community development.

She proposed joint efforts with the Police in intelligence sharing, community policing, early warning systems, peacebuilding and civic education. She also announced plans to establish an SSDC NPF Liaison Desk and pledged support for the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), saying improved welfare for officers’ families contributes to safer communities.

In his response, IGP Egbetokun commended the initiative and pledged the Force’s full support. He highlighted key areas of partnership, including protection of critical assets, expansion of community policing, tackling cybercrime and improving police infrastructure such as lighting up stations in the South-South.

“The Nigeria Police Force recognizes the vital link between security and development. We are committed to providing the framework necessary for SSDC to deliver on its mandate for the South-South,” the IGP affirmed.
