Senate Adjourns Plenary for Two Weeks to Scrutinise 2026 Budget

The Senate has adjourned its plenary sittings for two weeks to allow lawmakers carry out intensive committee-level scrutiny of the 2026 national budget.

The adjournment, which takes effect immediately, will see plenary resume on February 17, 2026.

According to the Senate, the recess is aimed at giving senators adequate time to engage with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), review budgetary allocations, and ensure fiscal discipline before the final passage of the Appropriation Bill.

The upper chamber noted that the exercise would strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the budgeting process, while aligning government spending with national development priorities.

The Senate further emphasized that the temporary pause in plenary reflects its commitment to a people-focused appropriation process that supports sustainable economic growth and effective governance.
