Removal of Bekwara Council Chairman Illegal, Unconstitutional, Null and Void - Obono-Obla

A former aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari and an APC stalwart in Cross River state Chief Okoi Obono Obla has described the removal of Mrs Theresa Ushie as Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area as patently illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void.

In a statement, Obono-Obla accused the Cross River State House of Assembly of overstepping its bounds by acting as accuser, prosecutor, and judge in Ushie's case.

He argued that the Assembly has no jurisdiction to remove an elected official, and that such power lies with the judiciary.

"The Cross River State House of Assembly has no jurisdiction to stray into the constitutional boundaries of the judicial branch,".

"This is a sad commentary on the state of governance in Cross River" Obla said.

He urged Ushie to seek redress in court, saying the rule of law must prevail over "political expediency".

He warned that any action taken outside constitutional authority is destined to collapse under judicial scrutiny.
