Prof. Edna Akpan to deliver 9th Inaugural Lecture of AKSU, To Focus on Global Food Crisis

A seasoned Professor of Crop Science, Edna Augustine Akpan, is billed to deliver the 9th Inaugural Lecture of Akwa Ibom State University.

Akpan's lecture, titled 'Waste to Wealth: Exploring the Frontiers of Organic Agriculture,' will aim to explore new horizons and deepen the conversation about the global food crisis, while also offering solutions.

The lecture is scheduled for Friday, March 20, 2026, at the Senate Building on the Main Campus in Ikot Akpaden, and will commence at 2:00 pm.

She is expected to highlight key research outputs in her field of expertise, following a successful stint at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), OCP-Africa, Solidaridad, European Union (EU), World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) , and a host of other local and international organizations in the past three decades.

Akpan is the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Akwa Ibom State University, and has served the University in different capacities as Director, Counselling Services, Vice Dean, Students Affairs, and Director Career Services Center.

The erudite academic was recently appointed the University Orator. She is also the current Director of the Centre for Hospitality Management and Tourism.

Her blistering career led to her appointment as Cassava Enterprise Development Project Manager at IITA to oversee Akwa Ibom State, before she was appointed coordinator of the South-South region.

She served as a member of the Akwa Ibom State Technical Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency in the immediate past administration of Akwa Ibom State and has widely consulted for the State’s Ministry of Agriculture, Women Affairs, and the Directorate of Agricultural Investment.

She is currently a lead consultant to Harvest Plus Nigeria/Gain International on Biofortification of Crops and Commercialization of Biofortified Crops in Nigeria.

Akpan belongs to Several professional bodies and has published more than 70 articles in reputable local and international journals and numerous book chapters.
