Otu Celebrates Journalists, Reaffirms Commitment to Press Freedom

By Benjamin GBOR

Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has commended journalists in the state and across Nigeria for their dedication to truth, professionalism and democratic values in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Linus Obogo, the governor said media practitioners are fearless defenders of truth whose efforts continue to reinforce democratic institutions and positively influence society.

Otu, while celebrating the Fourth Estate, acknowledged the vital role journalists play in informing citizens, safeguarding freedom and holding leaders accountable. He stressed that the media remains a cornerstone of democracy, serving as a platform for the voices of ordinary people and promoting transparency in governance.

The governor noted that journalism stands out as a critical institution because it gives a voice to the voiceless, enriches public discourse and preserves societal values through objective and courageous reporting.

He also recognised the daily risks and sacrifices journalists make in pursuit of truth, describing their resilience as indispensable to democratic survival.

According to him, the press functions as society’s conscience, bridging the gap between government and the people while fostering awareness, justice and national unity.

He added that Cross River State values the contributions of journalists in documenting progress, scrutinising public institutions and encouraging accountability.

Otu assured journalists of his administration’s commitment to press freedom and urged media professionals to uphold accuracy, fairness and responsibility in their work.

He concluded by celebrating journalists for their enduring impact on democracy and national development, noting that their work continues to guide and shape future generations.
