Otu Appoints Prof. Francisca Bassey as Substantive Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS
Prof Francisca Bassey, UNICROSS VC
In a strategic move to strengthen academic leadership at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Governor and Visitor to the University, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the appointment of Professor Francisca Bassey as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the institution.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, follows the recommendation of the University’s Governing Council after what has been described by government sources as a “rigorous, merit-based, and transparent selection process” involving top academic professionals from within and outside the state.
Professor Bassey, a distinguished scholar, researcher, and seasoned administrator, becomes the first woman to occupy the Vice Chancellor’s position since the institution transitioned into a full-fledged university. Her appointment is widely seen as a progressive step that aligns with Governor Otu’s broader vision of revitalizing education and fostering institutional stability across the state.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan Enoh, the Governor’s approval reaffirms the administration’s commitment to meritocracy, inclusivity, and the strategic placement of qualified Cross Riverians in key leadership positions.
“Her appointment reflects the Governor’s conviction that higher education leadership must be driven by competence, integrity, and vision,” the statement read.
Governor Otu congratulated Professor Bassey on her appointment and encouraged her to provide bold and transformative leadership that will consolidate existing achievements while steering UNICROSS toward becoming a centre of academic excellence, research, and innovation.
“You are stepping into a role that demands courage, creativity, and character,” the Governor noted in a congratulatory message. “The future of our university system must be anchored on global standards, and I have every confidence that you will lead with distinction.”
A graduate of the University of Calabar, Professor Bassey brings over three decades of experience in teaching, research, and academic administration. She has previously served in several leadership roles, including Head of Department, Dean of Faculty, and Deputy Vice Chancellor. Her academic work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications and policy engagements, particularly in the field of social sciences.
Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for UNICROSS, as the university undertakes the expansion of academic programmes, infrastructure development, and strategic industry partnerships.
Reacting to her appointment, Professor Bassey expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to work collaboratively with the university community, alumni, and government to raise the institution’s profile and reaffirm its role in driving human capital development in Cross River State and beyond.
The state government has assured the new Vice Chancellor of its full support, reiterating that education remains a key pillar of Governor Otu’s “People First” agenda.
