According to AI, Heartbreak affects over 75% of adults at some point in their lives, making it one of the most universal human experiences and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background.

Heartbreak is the intense emotional pain and sadness that follows the end of a romantic relationship, when often accompanied by feelings of rejection, loss and grief.

In Calabar, Cross River State, our reporter spoke with several individuals who bravely shared their emotional heartbreak stories with us.

“A  trader at Goldie  Mount Zion Mrs Blessing John, narrated how her first relationship of 3 years  ended because of genotype.  “I met a man so loving and caring. He was so intentional about loving me. He was older than me but made me felt we were of same age. He was someone who never gave up even when I was playing hard to get but genotype issue separated us.”

She continued: “There was a day he decided to ask about my genotype. That was how my heart was beating faster because I knew for him to ask, it could be that he was probably an AS or SS. Being an AS  I already knew that it might likely be the end. I told him I am AS. Guess what?  He told me that he is also an AS . Ahhh!!  Let me not go into details about what happened but just know it was not a pleasant experience . It was so painful and then he said,  we must not let each other go. For some reasons I wanted to agree with him, it was not my fault because we loved each other. But later I had to rethink and asked myself some questions, was it really worth it? Was the love really worth bringing a child to this world to be in pains and suffering? Can I handle it? And who is really going to be at the disadvantage point? The Husband or Wife? That’s how I blocked him on my phone and moved on with my life. I was hurt but sometimes love is not enough.” She narrated.

Moving round University of Calabar Campus, I met Miss Chidinma Okazie, who narrated her heartbreark story. She said:  “Hmm!  life has really dealt with me. I have been in a relationship with this man for 5 years. I loved and respected him so much. At some point, he came to see my people and  when my father asked to see his people he started bringing up excuses. My father did a background check on him and discovered that he was married with 3 kids in another state and that led to the end of the relationship. That left  me heartbroken and inflicted immense pains in my heart” At that point miss Chidinma Okezie felt so unhappy but finalised her story and said: “That experience made me felt less of myself but nevertheless destiny delayed is not denied. When the time is right love find will me”.

Also sharing his experience, Mr Samuel Okoh at Goldie Mount Zion, said that: “I was so in love with a lady in my university level. We dated from 100level to 400level. And I planned to marry her once am done with school and start making my own money but unfortunately I never knew she was in a relationship with an older man who is already making marriage preparations with her. She opened up to me and said, am sorry but we have to end the relationship. My marriage is in a week’s time and you are invited. Hmm, at that point I felt like my life has crashed”.

In the same vain,  Miss Ella  Okon at Unical Campus who gave an account on how her relationship crumbled due to her unfaithful partner, said: “I have done nothing wrong but to love and care for him genuinely. I have never requested for financial help from him before because I believe he does not have much to give. Unknown to me, he actually had another girlfriend whom he was taking good care of and giving her all the attention he did not give me.

Furthermore, Miss Ella Okon, recalled a bitter experience she once had. “I got to find out during Valentine’s Day when he offered  excuses on how things were tough for him and how he could not afford to get a Valentine’s gift for me. He was saying all this with a pitiful face which made me believed him. I even had to give him money for up keep that day.”

She went on: “The next day which was Valentine’s day, I received a call from a stranger who told me to come to a particular location and see for myself. On hearing that, I rushed there and behold I saw my boyfriend on his knees as he proposed to another lady in a room fully decorated with lots of gifts. I felt sharp pains in my heart and bursted into tears when he denied knowing me. Ahhh!! Indeed heartbreak hits really hard”  Ms. Ella Okon, cried.
