UNITED NATION HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR REFUGEES (UNCHR) HEAD SUB OFFICE EULOGIES THE CHAIRMAN OF OGOJA LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL

The Head Sub Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) Ogoja, Mrs. Irene Omondi, has praised the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Council for his proactiveness, particularly in his consistent support of the Agency's activities. She noted that his responsiveness is encouraging and signals better days ahead. Mrs. Omondi explained that her office had secured approval for the opening of a farm road from Adagom to Ndok communities in Ogoja Urban 2. This initiative is part of preparations for a sustainable means of supporting refugees domiciled in Ogoja, as the road will enhance food security in line with government policies.
Additionally, it will provide access to farmland along the corridor, which is closest to the markets.
She also mentioned that as part of sustainable development, UNHCR plans to implement an irrigation project, allowing for year-round food production, which will also serve as a means of empowering the youth.
The Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Council, Hon. Christopher Agbeh, who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Idi Yakubu, expressed gratitude to the Adagom community for their understanding and for offering their land to host displaced persons. He also thanked UNHCR for its continued provision of projects and assured them that the Council is always ready to offer support.
The Clan Head of Ndok Ntol, His Royal Highness Ashaba, also spoke, expressing appreciation to UNHCR for its numerous developmental programs aimed at fostering a harmonious relationship between the camp and the host community. He emphasized that Adagom welcomes the settlement of refugees, as Nigeria and Cameroon are one. His Royal Highness thanked the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Council for his reassurance and pledged continued support for all UNHCR programs.
Dr. Mike Udam, a representative of the community, expressed interest in the Terms of Reference for the contract and urged the contractor to engage the youth, especially in labor opportunities, and to involve them as gatekeepers. He also appreciated the Council for its follow-up on their activities.
In response, the contractor provided details of the project, stating that the scope of the contract includes 3.5 kilometers of road with three bridges and drainage systems. The contractor assured that they are committed to collaborating with the youth for engagement in the projects.
