Subsidy Removal: Tinubu Splashes N5bn On Each State, FCT For Palliatives To Nigerians
By Edem ITA
Determined to tackle the menacing hardship rattling Nigerians since he assumed power, President Bola Tinubu perfected plans to roll out relief packages to needy and vulnerable Nigerians grossly affected by the economic malady
The step is part of a determined effort to ameliorate the prevailing hardship triggered by petrol subsidy removal.
Under the scheme, President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the release of N5 billion to each of the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, for the procurement and distribution of essential food items
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno disclosed this while addressing State House correspondents shortly after today's monthly National Economic Council, (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
Governor Zulum revealed that the initiative is intended to bring temporary relief to cushion the rising cost of living currently being experienced by Nigerians attributable to subsidy removal
Under the remedial measure, States are expected to devote the money to the procurement of at least 100.000 bags of grains, beans, and other essential food items for onward distribution to households.
To boost the quantity of the palliative, the Federal Government is also allocating five trunks of rice to each state and the FCT to contend with the ravaging hardship.
The Borno Governor also stated that NEC unanimously agreed to accord special consideration in the palliative sharing formula to States on the fringes of Niger Republic borders to cater for the expected influx of refugees arising from the current political upheaval in the landlocked country.
