Calabar South to Get New Police Station, Governor Otu Commends Initiative

Grassroots security in Calabar South is set to significantly improve with Governor Bassey Otu's strong endorsement of a proposed police station in the Antingha community.
The initiative, spearheaded by Calabar South Local Government Area Chairman, Hon. Patrick Archibong, is seen as a crucial step toward reducing crime and fostering socio-economic growth.
Governor Otu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Emmanuel Ironbar, praised the initiative as “bold and timely” during the groundbreaking and foundation-laying ceremony in Antingha.
"This isn't just a brick-and-mortar project,it’s an investment in peace, protection, and progress," the Governor stated.
He emphasized that the new station will not only enhance law enforcement response and curb criminality but also create job opportunities, particularly for young people.
Governor Otu urged local government chairmen across the state to adopt a more proactive role in driving development.
"Every Local Government Area is a potential economic engine," he noted, encouraging council leaders to be innovative in areas like agriculture, small enterprise, infrastructure, or tourism.
Broad Support for Community Safety
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Erasmus Ekpang, supported the initiative, calling it a strategic move aligned with the state's broader vision for safety and development.
Similarly, Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Olusegun Omosanyin, representing the Inspector General of Police, Zone 6, Mustafa Bala lauded the project as vital for improving operational efficiency and strengthening police-community relations.
He anticipates "improved response time, better crime deterrence, and stronger cooperation between law enforcement and residents" with the dedicated station.
Traditional leaders also voiced their approval. Prof. Itam Hogan Itam, Paramount Ruler of the Efuts, praised the council chairman's commitment and urged residents to take ownership of the facility.
His sentiments were echoed by the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, HRM Etiyin Nyong Effiom Okon I, who stressed the importance of synergy between traditional institutions and security agencies.
Prof. Offiong Offiong, former Commissioner for Education, called it "a catalyst for educational growth and community participation," highlighting how a secure environment benefits school attendance and learning.
Rev. Ekpenyong Akpanika, Prelate of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, described the initiative as "a godly and courageous effort," advocating for more faith-based and community-led investments in justice and safety.
Highpoint was the ceremonial groundbreaking and laying of the foundation stone, performed by Hon Ironbar officially marking the start of construction.
