Labour Strike: C'River Records Poor Compliance

By Missang AKPET

Following the directive of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC for workers in the state to embark on a two day working strike beginning from today Tuesday, Beagles news was on the streets of Calabar to monitor compliance in the state.

Our correspondent reported that most of the government establishments visited were under lock and key in total adherence to the directive while those on essential duty ran skeletal services.

Although the strike was said to be a total shutdown with members of the Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN), the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) and National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) joining the strike, Nigerians were expecting a more serious affair but it seems only government establishments complied.

A visit to some of the banks around Calabar revealed full business activities during the usual banking hours.

At the PHED office along Calabar road, business was going on as usual while some marketers were seen going out to distribute electricity bills to consumers.

At the state house of Assembly, normal activities went on with some house members, aides and staff going about their normal duties.

Our reporter in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state Capital reported that there was a peaceful protest carried out in Uyo by the NLC while total shutdown was enforced.

Banks were not allowed to operate while the NLC task force team was monitoring the situation.

The two-day warning strike continues tomorrow, Wednesday as announced by Labour Union leadership.
