Ijaws Cries Out, Want political, Infrastructural Marginalisation Corrected By Okpebholo

From Osazua IMAFIDON (BENIN)
The Gelegele Community and other Ijaws extraction in Edo state have appealed to Gov. Monday Okpebholo led administration to correct decades of political and infrastructural marginalization of the people.
This is coming on the hill of their demand for security enhancement along the waterways of the state.
Mr Omaghomi Olu-Derimon,
Chairman, Gelegele Executive Council, who stated this to newsmen in Benin on Sunday, said that the appeal highlights ethnic disparities and the need for inclusive governance.
Olu-Derimon said the Ijaw people, being an integral part of the diverse cultural landscape of Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region, including parts of Edo, deserve consideration for political appointments in the government of Monday Okpebholo.
"Our historical significance, cultural richness, and economic contributions through fishing, trading, and other traditional livelihoods make us a vital component of the socio-political fabric of the state.
"The inclusion of Ijaw representatives in the government would reflect a commitment to cultural diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that all segments of the society feel represented and valued.
"The Ijaw people's expertise in fishing and maritime activities significantly contributes to the local economy.
"Recognizing our role through political appointments could further bolster our economic well-being and integration into the state's development plans," he stated.
On the issue of infrastructure, Olu-Derimon said, being the first oil producing community in Edo state, Gelegele Community, particularly deserved to feel government presence through infrastructural provision.
He appealed for the renovation of the only secondary school in Gelegele and fitting same with modern facilities.
Speaking on insecurity, the Gelegele Community Chairman advocates the setting and equipping of a vigilante group to secure the waterways as well as the community.
According to him, "a waterways vigilante would help in monitoring and protecting the water bodies from piracy, illegal fishing, and other criminal activities, thereby ensuring the safety of local fishermen and traders.
"By securing the waterways, the vigilante could support the local economy by protecting the livelihoods of those dependent on fishing and water-based activities, potentially leading to increased economic productivity and stability.
"The establishment of such a vigilante group could also foster community engagement and cooperation, as local residents would be directly involved in safeguarding their environment and resources."
