GOVERNORS HAVE NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO REMOVE, SUSPEND CHAIRMEN, AGF TO GOVERNORS

The federal government has
stated emphatically that Governors do not have the right to suspend or remove duly elected local government chairmen.

Reacring to  journalists' question about the Edo crisis in Abuja recently, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, declared that governors lack the constitutional authority to suspend or remove local government chairmen from office.

According to him "such actions are in violation of the principles of democracy and the rule of law"

Taken a swipe at Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo state move to remove council chairmen, AGF said no Governor has the powers to suspend or remove elected, describing such action as unconstitutional.

Edo governor, Monday Okpebholo, had suspended local government chairmen in the state.

The AGF restated that the autonomy of local governments as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, noting that any actions infringing on their independence are unconstitutional.

“Governors do not have the right to suspend or remove duly elected local government chairmen."
