Good Parenting: Panacea For Child's All-round Education - UNICAL Director Of Schools

The Director of Schools, University of Calabar, Dr. Teresa Akpama has described good parenting as one of the best ways in which a child's all-round education can be significantly improved. 

Dr. Teresa Akpama made the remarks during the 39th Graduation and Prize Giving Day of the University of Calabar Demonstration Primary School held recently in the school premises recently.

She maintained that the home is very pivotal to the child's learning process, adding that the basic skills needed in advancing literacy and shaping a child for academic excellence can be achieved through good parenting.

"At home, parents and guardians are expected to inspect, supervise and evaluate the child's school work and know the extent of progress the child has recorded in school while sending feedback to their teachers for further review of their performance," she averred.

The Director called on parents and guardians to brace up for more work and provide their children/wards with the basic tools for an effective academic performance, while lamenting most parents' failure to provide their children with the necessary books and other relevant learning materials.

Dr. Akpama, who is also the Chairman of the school's Governing Board, used the occasion to congratulate the Head Teacher and staff of the school for their sacrifices and commitment towards churning out thoroughbred kids for the next phase of their academic journey, describing the graduands as "children of excellence with a promising future."

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Bassey Icha, lauded the Teachers for the invaluable job they are doing in the school, which , he stated, has continued to impact on the pupils, adding: "Effective and dedicated service from beautiful minds, results in productivity".

He advised the graduands to be good ambassadors of the school, urging them to embrace greater opportunities available in every sphere of their future endeavours.

In a remark, the Parents-Teachers Association Chairman, Dr. Edward Adie also commended the efforts of the teachers in grooming the children to be better skilled. Dr. Adie cautioned the graduating pupils to eschew negative influences in the society, stating that studying and reading are continuous events.

In his address, the Head Teacher, UNICAL Demonstration Primary School (UDPS), Mr. Mbu Moses Mbu while welcoming everyone to the occasion, described the event as a tradition where at the end of each session Management, Parents, Staff and Pupils gather to appraise, evaluate and where applicable, celebrate the outcome of the academic year under review.

He used the opportunity to commend the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi for her efforts at giving the school revitalisation, describing her as a mentor, transformer, and a dogged woman noted for being a vanguard of gender equality. 

Also speaking, an alumna, Prof. Affiong Henry Effiong, who holds the enviable record of the first alumna to become a Professor, commended the school for her trailblazing strides in laying a solid foundation for its pupils.

The erudite Professor of Solid Sciences expressed her happiness towards the staff's tireless efforts and commitments to restoring dignity in the school, as well as positioning her to compete favourably with her counterparts across the country.

The well attended event featured dance presentations, mimes, recitations and short plays.
