In a remarkable display of solidarity, influential leaders from Cross River State have come together to endorse the bold renovation plans outlined by His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Governor of the state. This collective backing arrives amid vigorous public discussions concerning the 5-billion-naira project, which has ignited widespread debate.
On the 8th of September, 2023, during a media parley convened in Calabar, Governor Otu unveiled comprehensive renovation initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the Governor's office in Calabar, the Governors Lodge, and the Liaison Offices in Abuja and Lagos. The anticipated expenditure for this ambitious undertaking ranges between 3 to 5 billion naira.
The announcement triggered varied responses from the state's residents and indigenous people. While some scrutinized the allocation of such substantial funding for renovation, others contended that the present state of these facilities necessitated immediate attention.
In response to the ensuing debate, a coalition of influential leaders issued a press statement, unequivocally affirming their unwavering support for Governor Otu's decision. Signatories to this declaration include Hon. Eyo Nsa Ekpo Esq, Sir Maurice Effiwatt ksji, Hon. Victor Okon, Hon. Mrs. Ada Egwu, Prof. Emmanuel Eyo Esq., Rev. Hon. James Anam, Hon. Chief Ani Esin, and Hon. Joe Etene, Esq.
These leaders emphasized the pivotal role these iconic government establishments play as the primary interface for visitors and potential investors seeking engagement with the state administration.
The group further emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive image of Cross River State, particularly as the region endeavors to attract investments and tourists. They expressed their unwavering belief that Governor Otu, in alignment with his "peoples first" agenda, will judiciously allocate resources, ensuring that critical sectors such as security, education, healthcare, and road infrastructure also receive requisite attention.
‘It is however expedient for us to peruse and examine the context in which this projection was made by His Excellency.
Firstly, it is important to note that no rational Government in this era of accountability and transparency, will award a contract of 5 Billion naira, without budgetary provision being made for such major expenditure. It is on record that the first budget to be presented by this administration to Cross River State House of Assembly is still undergoing preparation at this moment. The Assembly will perform its constitutional duty by appropriating monies for these renovations, without interference by the Executive Arm of Government', they added.
This unified stance among Cross River's leaders reflects their dedication to advancing the state's interests and fostering its overall development. As the renovation project unfolds, it remains to be seen how effectively it aligns with the expectations and priorities of the state's populace.
