NUJ 2025: WE'LL PRIORITISE JOURNALISTS WELFARE, SKILLS DEVELOPMENT- NSIBIET JOHN

Ahead of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council elections slated for August 2, 2025, a front line candidate, Comrade Nsibiet John has vowed to prioritise the welfare, protection of rights and privileges of journalists when voted into office as Chairman.
Nsibiet John disclosed this while presenting his manifesto to news men as the campaign window opened today July 1, 2025.
With his manifesto christened 'Service', Nsibiet John disclosed that he intends to run a responsible, responsive and result-driven leadership for the benefit of members and the Union at large.
Harping on his enviable ethos, Nsibiet John showcased his tenure as the immediate past Chairman of the Federated Chapel of the NUJ as one filled with a proven track record of integrity, vision and achievement garnished with people-focused initiatives, innovation and tangible as well as accountability.
On capacity building and skills development for journalists, Nsibiet John promised to organize regular training on data journalism, digital story telling, investigations, ethics and media law while also facilitating certified
professional development through partnership with institutions and foundations.
With a vision of ensuring the welfare of members, the journalism expert announced that his administration shall strengthen and expand the NUJ Welfare Trust Scheme together with a micro-support fund for journalists in temporary financial distress.
He also promised to ensure timely and compassionate response to emergencies affecting members' lives or that of their families.
In a bid to protect the rights and dignity of journalists, Nsibiet John affirmed that his leadership will not compromise on press freedom and professional dignity as he will ensure that a Legal Support Desk will be established for journalists facing harassment or legal threats.
He further disclosed that he will advocate for improved remuneration and working conditions across the media sector while also taking a firm stand against censorship, intimidation and discrimination in the line of duty.
Nsibiet John who has been in journalism practice spanning two decades affirmed that service is not just his campaign theme but his philosophy, his pledge and his promise.
He further appealed to journalists to trust him with their votes as it will guarantee a greater NUJ in the state.
