C' River Police Arrest Environmentalist, Odey Oyama, For Allegedly Protesting Chinese Illegal Operation In Okuni Community

Police detectives have arrested
an environmental activist, Mr. Odey Oyama, at his Okuni residence, Ikom.local government area for allegedly championing the alleged illegal logging by Chinese firm
Oyama is the Executive Director of the Rainforest Resource and Development Center (RRDC) and an environmental crusader.
Eye witness told THE BEAGLE NEWS that Odey was arrested alongside 6 others on Tuesday January 14 by men of the Okuni area command of the Nigeria Police force.
Odey, who was arrested alongside a former youth president of Effi community in Okuni Village, Mr. Alobi Ofuka, according to a witness have been at the forefront of an environmental protection battle involving a Chinese wood processing company domiciled in Effi community, Okuni.
Although reasons for the arrest are yet to be stated by the police, community members who spoke with THE BEAGLE NEWS opined that the arrest might not be unconnected with the ongoing rift involving a Chinese wood processing company.
As at press time, it was reported that they have been moved by the police to the State APoluve Headquarters Calabar from Ikom.
