A'Ibom; Engaging Bilateral Discussions For Effective Budgeting
By Imoh Essien (Uyo)
Transparency and accountability, according to India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are the two cornerstones of any pro-people government as they do not only connect the people closer to the government but also make them equal and integral part of the decision making process.
In all his years in public office, Modi has demonstrated strong commitment to an open and transparent government where rules and policies are not framed in hidden Chambers but among the people.
The resultant effect of running a transparent government is that it builds trust between the citizen and government as well as fosters the people's confidence in their government.
This is the model operated by Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, since inception of his administration.
He has set new standards with regards to transparency and accountability in public service. Recently, Akwa Ibom State Government has launched a series of comprehensive bilateral discussions, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Development and Committee Chairman, Mr. Emem Almond Bob, to devise a pragmatic and effective budget for 2025.
These discussions focus on maintaining the state's financial stability and fostering a supportive environment for businesses while prioritizing citizens' well being.
Just as it has been the tradition of the state to run an all inclusive government, this has led to a collaboration between the government and stakeholders, including civil society organizations such as Policy Alert, which is crucial in formulating an inclusive budget that caters to the diverse needs of the state's residents.
This commitment to inclusivity and transparency cultivates trust among all participants, ensuring a well rounded and representative budget.
Many will say that the government has prioritized a smooth system of governance, but I can tell the world that the government's dedication to transparency, accountability, and responsibility in the 2025 Capital Estimate Bilateral Discussion, as well as in fiscal management, is a la hallmark throughout the process, setting an example for other states to follow.
