N70k Allowance: It's Improper To Reject What You Didn't Ask For, Ajero Tells TUC
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has described the decision of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reject the Federal Government's N70,000 transport allowance for public sector workers as improper.
Ajaero who stated this during an interview session on Channels Television on Thursday said officials of the TUC were not part of the negotiation that led to the approval of the allowance, hence they have no basis to reject it.
Recall that the Federal Government had announced a N70,000 transport allowance for public sector workers as part of measures to cushion the effects of current economic challenges.
The TUC had earlier rejected the allowance, insisting that what Nigerian workers need is a living wage and not a transport allowance.
But Ajaero maintained that the allowance was a product of negotiation between the NLC and the Federal Government and should not be dismissed by a party that was not at the table.
He urged labour centres to work together in the interest of workers rather than create division over palliatives meant to provide temporary relief.
