JUST IN: MRO Completion Will Transform Uyo Airport Into Aviation Hub
UYO, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Paul Bassey, has described the completion of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, as a major milestone that will transform the airport into a thriving aviation business hub. Bassey made the remarks while departing the airport to Lagos last Saturday July 18, 2026, where he was seen off by veteran journalist and publisher, Senior Citizen Solomon Okpo, alongside Israel Harry, Kits Manager , AKWA United FC, Commi and Austin George.
The Commissioner noted that the completion of the MRO represents the next logical step in the airport's development, stressing that once aircraft can be maintained in Uyo, airlines will have a compelling reason to operate from the state.
According to him, the development changes the airport from being merely a passenger facility into a centre for aviation business, with the potential to attract more airlines, create jobs and boost the state's economy.
Bassey also commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for completing the terminal project, describing it as a shining example of continuity in governance. He recalled that the airport was conceived by former Governor Victor Attah, significantly advanced by former Governor Udom Emmanuel, and completed under Governor Umo Eno.
He said the project demonstrates that government is a continuum and that successive administrations should always build on the achievements of their predecessors for the overall development of the state.
