C’River: Father Bags Life Sentence for Incest

By Benjamin GBOR

A 46 year old man, Imeh Sunday, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his daughter in Cross River State.

The judgment was delivered on Wednesday by Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court 2 in Calabar after the court found him guilty of incestuous rape.

The case was prosecuted by the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a non governmental organisation focused on protecting children and vulnerable persons.

In her ruling, Justice Egwu held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was compelling and proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the imposition of the life sentence.

Reacting to the judgment, the Principal Counsel of the organisation, James Ibor, commended the survivor for her resilience throughout the trial. He also praised her guardians, as well as the Ministry of Justice, the police and the judiciary for their roles in securing the conviction.

The organisation stated that the latest judgment brings to four the number of rape related convictions it has secured in the state within the last four months.
