Cape Verde's Cabral's Stunning Strike Voted World Cup's Finest Goal

Cape Verde defender Sidny Lopes Cabral has been crowned winner of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Hyundai Goal of the Tournament after his sensational strike against Argentina emerged as the fans' choice for the competition's finest goal.
The unforgettable moment came during Cape Verde's thrilling Round of 32 showdown with eventual finalists Argentina in Miami. With his side battling to stay in the contest, the 23 year old skipped past Alexis Mac Allister before curling a sublime effort into the top corner to make it 2,2. Argentina eventually prevailed 3,2 after extra time to continue its march to the World Cup final.
Cabral's spectacular finish secured the prestigious award ahead of Uzbekistan's Eldor Shomurodov, who finished second in the voting, while Haiti's Wilson Isidor claimed third place.
The Cape Verde international joins an illustrious list of previous recipients that includes Maxi Rodriguez, Diego Forlan, James Rodriguez, Benjamin Pavard and Richarlison.
Speaking after receiving the honour, Cabral said the goal was a product of instinct and confidence.
"After dribbling past my opponent, I saw the space and decided to have a go. I am comfortable shooting with either foot, so I aimed for the top corner. When I saw the ball flying in, I could hardly believe what had happened," he said.
"My teammates were screaming with excitement and I just started running. It was only afterwards that it dawned on me that I had scored such a memorable goal on football's biggest stage against a team like Argentina."
The strike also sparked emotional scenes in the stands, where his mother, Teresa, fainted while celebrating the goal.
Cabral revealed he had promised his mother and girlfriend before the match that he would celebrate with them if he scored.
"When I reached them, my mother was crying and did not even realise I was standing beside her because everyone was trying to help her after she fainted," he recalled.
Adding to the magical experience, former Brazil and Real Madrid star Marcelo, one of Cabral's childhood idols, sent him a congratulatory message after the match.
According to the defender, Marcelo told him he had voted the strike as the tournament's best goal and praised his performance, a gesture Cabral described as both humbling and unforgettable.
Cabral's rise to international prominence has been remarkable. Only three years ago, he was playing in Germany's fifth division while living under modest circumstances. Today, he has earned one of football's most coveted individual honours.
Before facing Argentina, Cabral had spoken of his excitement at the prospect of sharing the pitch with Lionel Messi. He left the tournament with far more than a cherished photograph, securing the FIFA World Cup 2026 Goal of the Tournament award and etching his name into football history.
