Édouard Mendy Reacts to CAF Decision on Senegal, AFCON

By Akpo ESCO

Senegal international goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has expressed disappointment over the Confederation of African Football’s decision not to award Senegal the Africa Cup of Nations title, criticising the continent’s football governing body.

Mendy said he was not surprised by the outcome, describing CAF as an institution that, in his view, has failed to evolve at the same pace as African football. He noted that players, coaches, and stakeholders across the globe continue to work tirelessly to elevate African football to the highest level.

According to him, decisions affecting the sport on the continent are being made by a small group of individuals he believes are not adequately equipped for the responsibility. He added that the issues are not limited to the 2025 AFCON, describing the latest development as “the final straw.”

Mendy further stated that CAF must reassess its structure and undertake significant reforms in the coming weeks or months. He concluded that the institution, as it stands, is flawed and does not position African football in the best light globally.
