AI will be used in the 2027 elections results verification process ~ Amupitan

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has announced the establishment of a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division within the Commission's ICT Department as part of reforms to strengthen electoral integrity.

Prof. Amupitan disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday during a world press conference and stakeholders' meeting on preparations for the upcoming elections.

According to him, the Commission has integrated automated AI auditing tools into its result verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework that operates under mandatory human oversight.

"An AI governance framework policy is being finalized by the Commission. In partnership with international technology leaders and partners, we are integrating our AI-driven anomaly detection tools to monitor database traffic and shield our portals against cyber intrusions or unauthorized alterations," the INEC chairman said.

He explained that the framework is designed to ensure that while AI is leveraged to enhance efficiency, transparency and security, all critical decisions remain subject to human control and accountability.

Prof. Amupitan also revealed that the Commission will conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise to test its systems, including the newly deployed AI tools, ahead of the polls.

He assured Nigerians and the international community that INEC remains committed to delivering credible, technology-driven elections that are secure from manipulation.
