Ahead of 2027, Reps increase campaign spending limits for elective office seekers

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the House of Representatives, during yesterday's plenary, approved the increase in campaign spending limits for candidates seeking elective offices in the country.

In its submission, on the recent approved changes, presidential candidates can spend up to N10 billion, from the initial N5 billion, governorship candidates can spend N3billion, from the initial N1billion, senatorial candidates will be at liberty to spend up to N500 million, as against the previous N100 million, and limits for candidates vying for election into the House of Representatives, was raised from N70 million to N250 million, while at the state level, candidates aspiring for state legislative seats could spend N100 million as against N30 million.

In its review, the lawmakers, went further to approve increase in spending limits for candidates seeking elective offices at the local government level. From henceforth, candidates contesting for chairmanship positions will be granted the liberty to spend up to N100 million as against the previous N30 million limit. Also, the spending limit for councillorship candidates was increased from N5 million to N10 million.
