Youths Protest Over Neglect of Ikom-Obudu Highway, Threaten 2027 Elections Boycott

By Missang AKPET

Defiant youths from Ikom, Boki, and Etung Local Governments have staged a peaceful protest along the Ikom-Obudu federal highway, urging relevant authorities to repair the dilapidated Ikom-Obudu road.

The youths, carrying placards with various inscriptions, have vowed not to participate in the 2027 general elections unless the road, abandoned for over 20 years, is rehabilitated.

They described the road as a traveler's nightmare, stating that its rehabilitation is long overdue, as it hampers vehicular movement, economic activities, and development.

According to them, the 115km Ikom-Obudu road is a major road that spans five local governments in the state, with five elected national assembly members responsible for its maintenance.

They called on Senator Eteng Williams, representing Cross River Central, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North, Hon. Victor Abang, representing Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency, Hon. Mike Etaba, representing Obubra/Etung, and Hon. Peter Akpanke, representing Obudu/Bekwara/Obanliku Federal Constituency, as well as the state government, to prioritize the road project before the onset of the rainy season.
