WEEKEND POLITICS: Tinubu, Akpabio Set to Restore Fubara

THERE are strong indications that President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, may have  concluded plans to restore democratic governance in Rivers state after the state of emergency ends

An indication to this emerged recently when Akpabio and a delegation representing President Bola Tinubu met with the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok‑Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd.), at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The visit is the first by top federal officials since the emergency rule was declared four months ago.

President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025, citing political unrest under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration. The governor, his deputy, and the state assembly were suspended. The Senate approved the declaration and confirmed Ibas to oversee the state during the emergency.

Sources said the meeting focused on security, infrastructure, and plans to restore democratic governance when the emergency ends.

Since his appointment, Ibas has replaced local government officials and dissolved some boards. He also appeared before a House of Representatives panel to account for his administration.

The emergency rule has been challenged in court by former lawmaker Dr. Farah Dagogo, who argues it is unconstitutional. Some groups have called for the return of the suspended governor.

The emergency rule is set to expire in September 2025.
