Jos – The University of Calabar’s (UNICAL) speedster, Mathias Iwara, etched his name into the record books on Tuesday, blazing down the track to claim the title of Fastest Man at the ongoing 27th Nigeria University Games (NUGA) in Jos.
In a breathtaking 100-metre final that kept the crowd on its feet, Iwara stormed across the finish line in a Personal Best (PB) time of 10.60 seconds, leaving his rivals chasing shadows. His blistering run saw him fend off a strong challenge from FUTA’s Adebayo Japhet, who clocked 10.74 seconds to take silver, while Benson Idahosa University’s Umechukwu Julius settled for bronze in 10.84 seconds.
It was a statement of intent from the UNICAL sprinter, who has shown steady improvement throughout the season. His composure out of the blocks and explosive finish in the final 40 metres sealed his dominance and earned him roaring applause from the packed stands.
With the victory, Iwara not only delivered gold for the University of Calabar but also confirmed his status as one of Nigeria’s emerging sprint sensations on the university circuit.
Athletics observers at the University of Jos Stadium described his performance as “technically sharp and mentally commanding,” crediting his perfect drive phase and mid-race acceleration for the win.
As the NUGA Games continue, all eyes will be on Iwara to see if he can replicate his golden form in the relays and further cement his growing reputation as a rising star in Nigerian athletics.
