UNICAL VC Appoints Ejue, Offiong, Etuk, Akpan, Others As New Directors

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced a fresh round of management appointments aimed at strategically repositioning the institution for enhanced efficiency, effectiveness, and improved service delivery.

The newly appointed directors include Prof. James Ejue of the Department of Guidance and Counselling, who has been named Director of Academic Planning, and Prof. Maurice Ekpenyong of the Department of Microbiology, appointed Director of Research and Development.

Also appointed are Dr. P. Bessong of the Accounting Department as Coordinator, Business Ventures, Prof. Ekwutosi Offiong as Director of Quality Assurance, and Prof. Bassey Oben as Director of SERVICOM.

Others include Prof. Bassey Offiong Ekpo of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, who assumes duty as Director, University of Calabar Consultancy Services (UNICALCONS); Prof. Offiong Ani Offiong of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies as Director, Institute of Asian and African Studies; and Prof. Saturday Etuk as Director, Alumni Affairs.

In further appointments, Prof. Bassey Ebi of the Department of Economics has been appointed Academic Director, Entrepreneurial Development Centre (EDC), with Dr. Orok Akainyene Billy of the Department of Banking and Finance as Deputy Academic Director. Meanwhile, Prof. Aniedi-Abasi Akpan Markson of the Department of Plant and Ecological Studies has been named Business Director, EDC, assisted by Dr. Fredrick Bassey of the Department of Marketing as Deputy Business Director.

The restructuring of the EDC aligns with the Vice Chancellor’s commitment to demarcate the Centre into distinct Academic and Business divisions to enhance productivity and sustainability.

Additionally, Dr. Offiong Oku (Community Medicine), Dr. Andem Bassey (Economics), and Dr. Chimezie Ndunagum (Geology) have been appointed Deputy Directors of Academic Planning, Centre for Educational Services (CES), and UNICALCONS, respectively.

All appointments take effect from January 1, 2026, and will run until December 31, 2027.

The Vice Chancellor has enjoined the newly appointed directors to fully align with the vision and mission of the current administration.

He advised them to uphold the core values, standards, and expectations of the University at all times.
