The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has conferred honorary degrees on Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, and Rear Admiral Garba Sadeeq Abubakar (Rtd) at its 38th convocation ceremony, in recognition of their contributions to national development.
Governor Otu was awarded a Doctor of Political Science (Honoris Causa), while Abubakar received a Doctor of Peace and Conflict Resolution (Honoris Causa) for his contributions to security and national service.
The Vice-Chancellor Prof Offing E. Offiong stated that the conferment aligns with the National Universities Commission (NUC) policy, which limits honorary degrees to not more than three recipients per convocation.
In his response, Otu expressed appreciation for the honour, describing it as a reflection of the values instilled in him by the institution.
“I am profoundly honoured to receive this doctorate award. This goes beyond a personal milestone; it is a celebration of excellence, service, integrity, character, and determination which UNICAL instilled in me,” he said.
He added that his entry into public service was driven by a commitment to serve humanity, dedicating the award to the people of Cross River State.
Otu also urged students to remain focused and disciplined, while pledging continued partnership with the university to drive development, promote cultural heritage through tourism, and empower youths.
