Three Years Without Power, Ikot Omin Residents Seek Otu’s Intervention ‎

By Missang Akpet

‎Residents of Ikot Omin Community, off Old Adiabo Road, Calabar, have appealed to Governor Bassey Otu to urgently provide a 500KVA transformer to restore electricity to the area after nearly three years of prolonged blackout.

‎‎In a letter addressed to the Governor, dated November 2, 2026 and signed by Mr. Stephen Dada on behalf of the residents, the community lamented that the absence of electricity had subjected households, business owners, artisans and students to considerable hardship.

‎The residents said the prolonged outage had disrupted economic activities, affected small businesses and hindered educational pursuits, adding that several engagements with relevant electricity authorities had yet to produce a lasting solution.

‎Describing Otu as a People First Governor, the community expressed confidence in his commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of Cross River residents.

‎‎“We humbly request your immediate intervention through the provision of a 500KVA transformer to adequately address the electricity needs of our growing community,” the letter stated.

‎The residents noted that the intervention would go beyond restoring electricity, explaining that it would stimulate economic activities, support businesses, enhance educational opportunities and improve the general quality of life in the neighbourhood.

‎‎“Your Excellency, we earnestly appeal to you to come to our aid and give Ikot Omin Community the much-needed attention it deserves,” the residents pleaded.

‎They also assured the Governor of their willingness to cooperate with the state government, Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and other relevant agencies to ensure the proper installation, protection and maintenance of the proposed transformer.

‎‎The community expressed hope that Governor Otu would respond favourably to the appeal and bring lasting relief to residents who have endured years without public electricity.
