Thierry Henry Opens Up About Living with Depression

By Akpo ESCO

“Throughout my entire career, I lived with depression. To understand that, you have to go back to my childhood,” Thierry Henry revealed.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t feel any affection. When my father held me in his arms, the first thing he would say was: ‘This baby will become an incredible footballer.’

“He shaped me. He was tough. At 13, I played a match we won 6–0. I scored all six goals. But it was always about what I hadn’t done, never what I had done.

“I always lived with fear, with the feeling that I had to please others through my football and my money, until the day my partner and my children started crying for the person I am. That’s when you finally feel human.”
