State Police: 36 Governors Demand More Security Powers From FG

Nigeria’s 36 governors are pushing for constitutional backing to control security operations in their states.

The meeting which also had in attendance Attorneys-General, legal experts, and senior security officials was aimed at drafting a constitutional and legal framework for decentralized policing nationwide.

Key proposals included in a communique from the meeting included constitutional recognition for governors to coordinate local security operations, Cooperative federalism model where federal Police will handle only crimes of national scope while State Police will prevent, investigate, and help prosecute offenses under state laws, stronger state voice where a rotating State Attorney-General will sit on the National Police Council to improve state input on national policing policy, guaranteed funding, with Clear constitutional provisions for sustainable financing of state police.
