Senate Approves Bill to Establish Federal University of Technology in Odukpani

The Nigerian Senate has given final legislative approval for the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Odukpani in Cross River State. The bill, sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, who represents the Southern Senatorial District of the state, passed its third reading during Thursday’s plenary.

Presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the session marked a significant milestone for the long-anticipated federal institution, which is expected to expand access to science and technology education in the region.

Reacting to the development, Senator Ekpenyong expressed deep appreciation to his colleagues for their support, describing the bill as a transformative step for the state.

“This bill, once signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will close a gap of over 50 years in the establishment of a federal university in our state,” he said.

He added that the university would focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, positioning Cross River as a future hub for innovation and technical expertise.

Beyond academics, the university is expected to serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development, particularly for Odukpani, a resource-rich area that has remained underdeveloped despite its proximity to the state capital.

“When established, this institution will not only educate but also stimulate economic activity and infrastructure growth in Odukpani, which has for too long been overlooked,” the senator noted.

The proposed university will complement ongoing efforts by the Cross River State Government to broaden access to quality education and improve human capital across the state.

The bill now awaits presidential assent to be enacted into law.
