... Withdraws Members from AKHA Over Appointment of Non-Journalist As Press Secretary
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Akwa Ibom State has expressed displeasure on the recent appointment of Mr Nkereuwem Udom, a non- journalist as the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. The members of the union, in a unanimous decision, expressed their dissatisfaction over this development, Wednesday, June 28, 2023 during the chapter's monthly congress at NUJ Press Centre in Uyo.
The body of the pen profession in the state resolved in her communique to withdraw all her members from the Assembly Press Corps and noted that the speaker does not deserve the services of her members by making such appointment.
The NUJ believes that the appointment poses a significant threat to the integrity of journalism and the indispensable role it plays in society. They argue that such a decision undermines the professionalism and expertise required for effectively discharging media duties.
The communique was signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk; the State Secretary, Comrade Dominic Akpan, the NUJ emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of its members and upholding the credibility of journalism in Akwa Ibom State.
Others who endorsed the document were the Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee, Comrade Iniobong Ekponta; alongside the Secretary, Comrade Dianime Uko and a Member, Comrade Emem Okon.
