In a significant move to improve student mobility on campus, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Banku Obi, has acquired a fleet of brand-new buses to facilitate easier and more convenient movement within the university.

The official launch took place on Friday, February 21, 2025, in front of the university’s administrative building.

During the event, the Vice Chancellor handed over the keys to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comr. Blessing Alims, amidst cheers from students, staff, and visitors.

According to Prof. Obi, the acquisition of the buses aligns with her administration’s commitment to enhancing the student experience by providing a conducive learning environment.

“We recognize that transportation is a critical aspect of campus life, and we are determined to make it easier and more convenient for our students to move around.”

She further praised the SUG President and her team for initiating the project, noting that student-led initiatives can make a tangible impact when properly executed.

“Since assuming office, I have encouraged the SUG to embark on visible and impactful projects. Their population and resources make it possible for them to execute meaningful initiatives. I am particularly thrilled that the First Female SUG President is working alongside me as the First Female Vice Chancellor—together, we are making history.”

The newly acquired buses are fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern safety features. They will operate on a scheduled route covering all major areas of the campus, including the staff quarters, Engineering Faculty, and the new Pharmacy building.

This initiative is expected to reduce transportation challenges, enhance campus safety, and improve accessibility for both students and staff.

SUG President, Comr. Blessing Alims, described the initiative as a dream come true, emphasizing that the shuttles will not only ease students’ stress but also enhance campus security, particularly for those commuting at night.

Students expressed excitement about the new development, praising Prof. Obi’s student-centered leadership.

“This is a game-changer for us,” said Uket Johnson, a 300-level student of the Department of English and Literary Studies.

“We no longer have to worry about getting to our lecture venues at the Engineering and Pharmacy Faculties. The VC has truly demonstrated that she cares about our welfare.”

Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Cross River State Chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, lauded the initiative, describing it as the first of its kind in the university’s 50-year history. “This is happening at a remarkable moment—when UNICAL has its first female VC and first female SUG President, and as the institution prepares to celebrate its golden jubilee.”

He urged students to utilize the buses responsibly to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the initiative.

The introduction of the new buses is part of a broader effort by Prof. Obi’s administration to improve student life and academic experiences. Other key initiatives include: Renovation of student hostels; Upgrading and remodeling of lecture theaters; Award of scholarships to exceptional students; and Expanding the university’s academic curriculum. As the UNICAL community celebrates this milestone, it is evident that Prof. Obi’s vision for a student-friendly and academically excellent institution is rapidly becoming a reality.
