UNICAL Set to Host 137th Inaugural Lecture on Sustainable Food Security

By Ebi COLLINS

The University of Calabar is gearing up to host its 137th inaugural lecture, spotlighting a timely and globally significant topic: food security in an era of growing environmental and economic uncertainty. Slated for Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the lecture will be delivered by Professor Susana Ben Ohen, an esteemed academic in the field of Agricultural Economics, at the UNICAL International Conference Centre. The event will commence promptly at 3:00 PM.

Professor Ohen, a reputable scholar in Marketing and Agribusiness Management from the Department of Agricultural Economics, will present on the theme: “Bridging the Gap: Market Intermediaries, Ecosystems, and the Quest for Sustainable Food Security in a Changing World.” Her lecture will explore the intricate dynamics between agricultural markets, intermediaries, and ecological systems, and how these relationships impact sustainable food systems, especially in developing nations like Nigeria.

At a time when global food systems are under increasing strain due to climate change, population growth, and market volatility, Professor Ohen’s lecture promises to offer critical insights into innovative policy solutions and economic strategies to strengthen agricultural sustainability, improve market access, and ensure long-term food availability.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Banku Obi, will preside over the event as Chief Host. Also expected at the occasion are senior university officials including Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka I. Icha, Acting Registrar, and Mr. Moses Obule, Director of Human Resources & Establishments and Secretary to the Committee of Deans.

Stakeholders from academia, government, agribusiness, and civil society are expected to attend, as the university once again reinforces its position as a hub for critical thought and solution-driven scholarship.
