Tinubu Shops For Next INEC Chairman As YakububTenure Ends In November, 2025

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is facing a critical decision in appointing a replacement for Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). With Yakubu's tenure ending in November, there are concerns about a plot to compromise the 2027 general election by appointing a pliable successor.

According to a report by the Vanguard on Thursday March 27, 2025, sources close to the President indicate that he is aware of the importance of credible polls and is seeking a replacement who will ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

However, there are fears that powerful forces, including a former South-South governor, are pushing for a candidate who will undermine the independence of INEC.

The appointment of a credible chairman is crucial in rebuilding trust in INEC, which has been eroded by recent controversies, including the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Results Viewing Portal (IReV) during the 2023 general election.
