In a solemn display of friendship, Senator Sandy Ojang Onor in company of his dear wife, Barr (Mrs) Gertrude Manyo-Sandy Onor, and other members of his entourage, on April 27, 2024, extended his deepest condolences to his bosom friend, Rt. Hon. Alex Egbona, Member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, over the passing of his beloved mother, Madam Maria E. Enyia, fondly known as Mma Alex.

Senator Onor expressed profound sadness over the loss, highlighting her remarkable contributions to her family, community, and society at large.

In his condolences at Ekureku Community in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State, he reminisced about the warmth and hospitality that Mma Alex exuded, noting her unwavering dedication to nurturing and supporting her family and friends.

"Over twenty years ago, we came to Agbara; Gertrude and I and many of our other friends and we met her in her elements. She gave us food and more food and would insist that we should eat even more. She would come to Calabar and would bring us pieces of Agbara. It would come in the shape of rice or yams. She gave us pet names."

He further described her as a woman of exemplary character, whose grace and dignity inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her.

"Mama was an epitome of warmth. Mama was a bastion of availability. Mama's laughter could ring across this arena. Mama was an epitome of real motherhood. She was a matriarch. I am sure you got your dose of generosity from her."

"So, I am very sure that Mama is with God as we speak. And, from Heaven she would continue to pray for us that God should guide us and guide you in particular."

Political leaders from various platforms, including the former Governor of Cross River State, H.E Senator Lyel Imoke, Minister for Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh, Rt Hon. Daniel Asuquo (Dansuki), Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barr Alphonsus Eba, Special Adviser General Duties to Governor Bassey Edet Otu, Barr Ekpenyong Akiba, and representatives from the National Assembly and State Governors, attended the funeral service.
